Not "Totally Automatic"

Look at the lines on this camera. And one thing missing from digital cameras -- the weight. When I used to shoot with a Minolta 7xi - my camera of choice - it had real weight to it. And, once, in all my years of carrying Minolta cameras, I dropped one. And you know what happened when it hit the street? It had a teeny tiny scratch. Picked it up, dusted it off, and it worked fine -- no problems. You drop one of these digital cameras and you better be ready to buy another. Give the cameras we used to photograph the respect they deserve -- they were built tough and they lasted.

Ahead of the Rest

No matter how many times I see one of these hood ornaments, I must photograph it. I have been so fortunate over the years with the lighting conditions to allow me to capture what I feel are some great shots.

Bring the Snow!

The freezing and thawing of snow can yield some interesting formations, which react to light in drastically different ways. How many different colors does this pure white snow appear to present itself? Highlights, shadow, depth. Everyone's in such a rush to shovel it all away and clear the roads to get to jobs they don't care for or to the store to buy something they don't really need. Remember the days when all you wanted to do was go out and enjoy the snow? Sledding, building snow forts, snowball fights, feeling the crunch beneath your feed, sliding down your street on your boots trying to see how far you could go?

Follow the Leader

The flowers stretch around one after the other from the foreground to the background.

So often we are asked to critique. What do you like about this painting, that book, the movie? What specifically did you enjoy? What didn't work for you? What would you have rather seen happen? Then you may have the arttists, writers, filmmakers ask you those or other questions. What did you come away from the film thinking? What did you take from the story? What did you see? I've been on both sides of this equation, but more often as a writer I ask, "Did you enjoy the story [I wrote]?" As a photographer, "Do you like this photo?" This doesn't mean that I don't appreciate the more in depth analyses, should people offer them, but for me the questions are much more simple. I write because I have stories to tell, I photograph because I see things I find beautiful. Not everyone has a grand sophisticated artist statement. I share my stories because I like to make people laugh, and I share my photographs because I like to share what I have seen.

Life is a Puzzle

Figuring out how to arrange all the pieces...where they fit -- never easy.

Union Trust

One of two fabulous stain glass structures I found on my travels to Maine. Beautiful and functional, and unique. This is actually part of a bank's clock that is larger than me.

Put me in, Coach

I want to give a "shout out" to the Deckers in Millersville for all their hospitality over the holidays. This image is but one of many that I have because of Tom Decker and Tim Decker giving of their time and allowing me to photograph so many wonderful items they have. They helped me with lighting, composition, encouragement and their time. Thank you for so many wonderful suggestions, great feedback, constructive criticism, and all of your help.

Time to Reflect

When you lose someone there are no words to ease the pain.
One remembers...and then takes stock in one's own life.

The Art of Bargaining

Shooting from the hip, so to speak, got me this one on the second shot. From here, I tried to refine my composition, moving about. The harder I tried, the more I thought about it, the worse the results were. Sometimes, it's what you first see that will work best for you.

Less Light, More Oomph.

You've seen the camera before. This time around, I opted for a different light source. Gone is the harsh light. The result: a more intimate photograph and a stronger image.

Saddle Up

New year, new trails to explore. And bring that camera, we've got new photographs to take.
